Many couples find themselves experiencing repetitive conflicts, and feeling stuck despite their best efforts to make changes. You might feel as if you’re having the same conversation over and over again, or struggling to have difficult but important discussions together.
If you feel worried about your relationship or stuck in conflict, couples therapy can help you to find a way forward. Couples often begin to feel more hopeful after a few meetings, and many find that working through their difficulties in couples therapy leads to a closer and more fulfilling relationship.
Issues I commonly help with include:
As a couples therapist, I look at how issues exist between people rather than within one individual, and ensure that each person is thoughtfully listened to.
Three areas I often look at are your personal histories and their impact; the history of the relationship and other important contexts; and how you communicate in the present moment, offering active feedback to help you find new ways of relating to one another. In a process we undertake together, I assist you in exploring what changes each person can make to achieve meaningful change in the relationship and more closeness and satisfaction.
In our first consultation, we’ll begin to get to know one another, and to talk about your concerns and hopes. I aim to make the discussion useful to you, and for you to feel able to express yourself freely. After our first meeting, we’ll discuss how to move forward in the service of your goals; I typically recommend weekly meetings to make and sustain progress. I endeavor to help you achieve deep and sustainable change in order to be ready to continue without my assistance.
If you have worries about your family, professional guidance and support can help you to address your concerns and find a way forward together. Family therapy can help with any dilemmas that affect relationships among family members. Issues that families often seek assistance with include:
In family meetings, I help you to build on your family’s strengths and to find new perspectives and ways of resolving your concerns. I ensure that each person feels included and listened to. My approach is informed by structural family therapy and Open Dialogue.
Meetings typically last 60 minutes; we decide the frequency together at the end of the first meeting. I offer the option of having another family therapist present for co-facilitation, dependent on colleagues’ availability. This provides your family with additional support, and the opportunity to hear the therapists talk with one another about their thoughts about the meeting.
Whether you’re looking for help in making changes in your life, improving your relationships, or adapting to life changes, individual therapy can help you to find a way forward with life dilemmas. I provide deep listening and a caring, candid relationship, helping you to better understand yourself, what hinders you, and to find steps forward in the service of your growth. My approach is informed by training in psychodynamic and integrative harm reduction psychotherapy, dialogic practice, and EFT.
I also offer counseling specialized in substance use issues. If you struggle with substance use or other behaviors that feel out of control, I provide a non-judgmental and collaborative space to assist you in identifying your goals and making positive change, whether toward moderation or abstinence. I also work with individuals who have recently completed treatment programs to integrate and maintain their progress in recovery. I am certified in integrative harm reduction psychotherapy and committed to assisting you in creating a plan that is consistent with your goals.
Therapy for couples and families experiencing repetitive conflicts to achieve meaningful change and increase closeness, grounded in a decade of experience and systemic and psychodynamic approaches.
